Weight-loss Surgery Can Put Diabetes Into Remission: Virginia's Story

There has been a great deal of talk about the weight-loss surgery study by Geltrude Mingrone, MD. In this study, Dr. Mingrone found that those who are morbidly obese or can't control their diabetes through medicine, diet and exercise alone can benefit from bariatric surgery as a treatment option. *At GMC's Center for Surgical Weight Management (CSWM), we are helping patients everyday who have found that bariatric surgery is not only beneficial in treating their diabetes, but also aids in reducing high blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and improving overall health. Below is Virginia's story. Virginia was a juvenile diabetic and since having bariatric surgery, she is no longer on an insulin pump. Read her story as she takes you through her journey.

 

Virginia was a juvenile diabetic and she wasn’t supposed to live past 4-years old. As a teen and young adult, the diabetes was dormant, but in her thirties, the disease became active. She tried everything to lose weight. She felt like a hamster on a spinning wheel. She got nowhere, each year adding pounds and medical diagnoses. Eventually, she was taking medications to control high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. She became depressed and accepted her fate of a young death. There was no joy in her life.

Because of her weight and diabetes, she couldn’t scuba dive or go zip lining, which are things that she always wanted to do. She saw bariatric surgery as a tool to help her in decreasing caloric intake, leading to weight loss that would make physical activity possible.

The day of surgery, she was able to discontinue the insulin pump and no longer required the pump or injections. She feels healthy and free. She now has the tools that she needs to make permanent changes. She has now been zip lining, and she is taking scuba lessons!
